HOLES OPENING, LOCAL RULES & MAT USAGE

The course works are now starting to bed in nicely with the ambient temperatures helping the newly laid turf to root. Some of the remaining pieces of tidying work are also now being completed with the installation of the new path on the 1st hole being completed this week, and the completion of the new steps to the ladies tee.

As mentioned in my newsletter 2 weeks ago, we are monitoring the growth and condition of the surfaces closely with a view to opening sections of holes as and when they are ready. The 1st of these is likely to be the 17th green, followed by the reinstatement of the 2nd tee. In addition, some of the renovated bunkers will be brought back into play this week, with a view to having the course back to normal over the next month or so.

As and when the 17th green is brought back into play, the newly laid green surrounds and re-built bunkers will be GUR. There will be drop zones in place short left and right of the green which will be compulsory. You may of course walk on the turf to collect your ball before dropping it, but please do not play from any of the new areas. This will be a free drop for all.

Lastly I write to ask for your support in solving the “disappearing mat” issue that we are currently facing on the course, which is sadly resulting in more damage to the fairways. As you all know we operate fairway protection in certain areas following the advice of our Agronomist, but it would seem that similar to last year, the rules in place are now being bent slightly. There are two issues here that I would kindly ask you to address:

1. Please do not take the mats with you when you find one you like. We have noticed several players picking up a mat from the 2nd hole and then carrying it with them for their round, and sometimes for the whole winter. Whilst this idea means you yourself don’t have to walk to find a mat, it means that other golfers have to walk twice as far to locate one. This in turn is resulting in some players not bothering and others pulling their balls back to the start of the mat zone and taking divots right on that line. If you are someone who has a mat in your bag or practices the above, please replace your mat when you are next at the club so we can make sure that each area is suitably catered for.

2. As mentioned above, we are now starting to see lines and groups of divots right at the line designating the mat area. Please don’t do this! By not locating a mat and following the rules in place, you are simply damaging the course unnecessarily for the season to come. Please do locate a mat and help protect the course for your pleasure in just a few short weeks’ time.

Thank you for your cooperation with above, the winter is nearly over and we are all looking forward to playing the full 18 holes in great condition once the season starts.
