Last Wednesday we hosted a Members’ Forum to discuss the 1st, 17th and 18th hole project. There were 48 attendees in total, many of whom contributed to the discussion. Thank you to all for attending, I hope the majority of questions were answered, I know that the Green Committee are looking forward to reviewing the comments.

During the meeting a few pertinent points were raised by different members, some of which I note for you below, with updates where possible:

17th Green – Are we creating a health and safety risk by the moving the green to the left and have our insurers been informed?
At the meeting it was confirmed that a risk assessment will need to be completed before the work commences, and that when complete the insurers will be informed. Since the meeting last week I have been in contact with our insurers who have confirmed in writing the following “This has been noted and no input is needed from Aviva”. All we have been asked to do is once the work has been completed and “bedded in” for a period, we update them of any notable changes if required.

This, coupled with the advice of a retained professional, hopefully assures you all that the matter has been addressed fully.

17th Green – Should the Committee be changing a James Braid hole?
A sensitive point and one not to be brushed under the carpet. The history of the course is of the upmost importance to the Committee, and has already influenced some of the proposals for the 1st hole (changing the tee back to its original design). However, with an evolving game, changing conditions and a drive to improve, many of the James Braid holes have been changed over the years. Further consideration will be given to the plans for the 17th green as a result of feedback received on the night, and further comments from Marc Westenborg (Architect), but it is fair to say that the bunkers and water level challenges that the current 17th green presents, do need to be addressed as it isn’t OK to have preventable GUR in one area year on year. Any changes to the presented plan will be communicated to members as and when they are available, and it is in everyone’s interest to ensure that all items have been fully discussed.

Bunker removal on the 1st hole.
A few members commented about the removal of the two bunkers located to the front corner of the 1st green. There is no update on this area as yet, but the Green Committee will consider all options before final plans are agreed.

Professional Services?
It was confirmed during the meeting that we are working with both Marc Westenborg as our Architect, and STRI for professional agronomic input. It was clarified that these two appointments provide full indemnity for the work.

Financing the Project?
It was confirmed that whilst the total figure of the project is not yet known, any funds required above the £100,000 already placed in the budget, will come from the balance currently on hand in the bank and not from a new member’s levy.

Tendering for the Contract?
It was confirmed that Marc Westenborg will be generating the tender document which will be sent to 4 contractors for quotations. It was also noted that the costs will be reviewed line by line to ensure that the best price, for the desired result, is achieved.

What happens next?
Since the meeting new conversations have taken place between Marc Westenborg, the Greens Chairman, myself and our Course Manager. Items tabled at the meeting have been discussed, and a Green Committee Meeting took place on the evening of Wednesday August 8th. Further consideration will be given to the 17th hole as a result of the comments noted above and as mentioned, any amendments to plans will be communicated.

There were additional points raised at the meeting but the above outlines the majority of talking points. Any further information will be communicated as and when it is available.
